Local attractions

Ferryside is off the beaten track, located about 15 minutes south of Carmarthen, south Wales, on the Towy Estuary opposite Llanstephan. The village centre offers a cafe, a pub, a post office and a general store. The beach stretches along the length of the village and boasts breathtaking views on a sunny day. At the far end, you can even see Laugharn around the coastline (formerly home to Dylan Thomas). At low tide, the shores attract many waders and waterbirds, including curlews and resident egrets. The surrounding farmland brings Red Kites, Buzzards and Peregrine Falcons. When the tide is right, it is possible to fish for River Towy Sewin right off the beach. The River Towy Yacht Club has a slipway for launching boats and canoes. Ferryside Station has one of the few manned signal boxes left in the UK.

Along the coastal road towards Kidwelly lies St Ishmael’s Church, with fascinating headstones of local mariners. Further afield, it is a short drive to a wide range of attractions, including the National Botanic Gardens of Wales, the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust site at Llanelli, Kidwelly Castle (just one of a multitude of stunning castles in the area), the literary base of Laugharn, the beautiful area around Llandeilo, Ffos Las Racecourse, and the Oakwood and Heatherton amusement parks. Pembrey Country Park (15 minutes drive) offers extensive parkland, children’s play areas, horse riding, cycle hire and trails, a toboggan run, a dry ski slope, and the long sands of Cefn Sidan beach from which you can see the Gower Peninsula. It is less than an hours’ drive to the Gower World Heritage Site, one of the most beautiful areas in the UK. We are also within easy reach of the seaside towns of Pendine, Saundersfoot and Tenby.
